Anthropic's IPO Filing: What the S-1 Numbers Say, and What They Don't
Anthropic's public S-1 shows $16.3B in first-half revenue and an $80.7B net loss. Here is how to read the numbers, risks and open questions.
Anthropic made its IPO paperwork public on 26 October 2026, applying to list on Nasdaq under the ticker "ANT." The filing is the first detailed look at the finances of a frontier AI lab, and the headline numbers pull in opposite directions: huge revenue growth and a huge loss.
The headline figures
According to VentureBeat's reading of the S-1, revenue for the first half of 2026 was $16.3 billion, up about 1,300% from $1.16 billion a year earlier. Yahoo Finance's coverage compares that with $4.6 billion for all of 2025. The two outlets agree on the net loss: $80.7 billion.
That loss looks alarming but is mostly an accounting effect. VentureBeat reports that about $72.4 billion came from revaluing convertible notes and similar financing instruments as the company's valuation rose, with another $8.72 billion in other non-cash charges. The operating loss was far smaller, $693 million, down from $2.14 billion. Operating cash flow was positive at $3.93 billion, which the company partly attributes to the timing of customer payments.
A simple analogy: if you issue a bond that converts into shares, and the share price soars, you "owe" more on paper even though no extra cash left your account. That is roughly what drives the headline loss here.
Where the money goes
Compute is the big cost. The reported compute and infrastructure spend was $8.95 billion in the half-year, versus $2.33 billion a year earlier. The bigger issue is the future: VentureBeat says one disclosed equipment lease implies about $125.2 billion in rent over five years, and Yahoo reports plans to spend more than $450 billion on cloud computing in coming years. The two figures describe different things and should not be added together. Anthropic also warns that missing certain obligations could trigger defaults under other agreements, and that cloud providers have not always supplied the capacity it wanted.
Who is paying
More than 1,900 customers generated at least $1 million in the prior 12 months, and about 250 generated $10 million or more, as of 30 September. Usage-based sales were 80% of first-half revenue. Yahoo notes that roughly one-fifth of revenue came from two customers, a concentration risk investors will weigh.
The risk factors are unusual
Beyond the usual finance warnings, the filing reportedly covers AI-specific exposures. It says it is unclear when an AI agent's actions could legally bind the business deploying it, that human reviewers may not keep pace with autonomous systems, and that a severe AI incident could exceed what insurers can cover. In October the FTC issued an investigative demand covering consumer protection, privacy and product safety; the filing does not establish wrongdoing. Yahoo also reports a supply-chain-threat designation from the Defense Secretary, which Anthropic is challenging in court, and an export control directive that affected access to two models for foreign nationals.
What is not known
The filing leaves out the number of shares and the price range. Reports of a valuation of up to $2 trillion are estimates, not filing disclosures; the last confirmed figure in coverage is $965 billion after a $65 billion raise in May. Whether the $125.2 billion lease is the full extent of commitments is unclear. The coverage also contains no independent audit view.
Why it matters beyond Anthropic
Its numbers hint at how AI economics may look at scale: rapidly growing usage revenue paired with enormous, long-dated infrastructure commitments. Anyone building on AI should note that pricing, availability and vendor stability depend on those compute bills.
Key takeaways
- Anthropic's S-1 reportedly shows $16.3B first-half 2026 revenue and an $80.7B net loss, mostly non-cash revaluation charges.
- The real pressure is long-term compute commitments, including one lease implying about $125.2B over five years.
- Share count, price range and any valuation are still unknown; treat $2 trillion headlines as estimates.
