Claude Duet and the Rise of Proactive AI Agents: What Changes for Busy Professionals
Anthropic's Claude Duet and Meta's Muse Wonder push AI agents that remember and act without being asked. What they do, and what to check first.
For most of AI's short history, you had to ask first. A new wave of products flips that. On 21 October 2026 Anthropic announced Claude Duet, a "proactive" agent, and a week earlier Meta launched new models built around memory and long-running goals. The pitch is that AI should notice what needs doing before you open a chat.
What Claude Duet is
According to MacRumors, Duet is built on Opus 5.5 and aimed at professionals and small business owners with too much to track. It connects to your apps, sends a short morning brief on important items, and checks those apps every few hours to send alerts. It can handle simple admin as well as bigger jobs such as building web apps. It runs in the cloud on a virtual machine with its own browser, so it does not need access to your computer.
Everything happens in one ongoing thread, using the memory, skills and connected apps from your existing Claude account. Think of it as a chief of staff who reads your inbox overnight and leaves a note on your desk, rather than an assistant who waits to be called.
Guardrails and limits
Anthropic says Duet asks permission before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting files. It does not see passwords or logins when given account access, and a classifier and safety system prompt screen each message to guard against leaking sensitive information. These are company claims; they have not been independently tested in the coverage reviewed.
Availability is narrow. It is a research preview with a waitlist, limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, on the web and as a standalone iOS app. There is no separate price: Duet draws on your existing plan limits, and its background checks count toward them. That last point matters, because an agent that checks apps every few hours can quietly use a lot of your quota.
Meta's competing approach
On 12 October Meta launched Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, which it says match or top the latest models from OpenAI and Anthropic on benchmarks, according to Axios. Two features are relevant here: Active Memory, which keeps information about a user across conversations, and Active Focus, which keeps an agent working toward a goal and adapting when it hits obstacles. Meta's benchmark claims have not yet been independently tested, and Axios flagged privacy and security risks from agents that remember personal data and act on a user's behalf. MacRumors also names OpenAI's "Dots" as another rival in this category, though we have no detail on it.
Practical takeaways for users
A proactive agent is only as safe as its permissions. Before connecting one, decide which apps it really needs. Start read-only where possible, and treat approval prompts as real decisions rather than clicks to dismiss. Check how background activity counts against your plan, and keep an eye on what it remembers about you.
For small businesses, the best first uses are low-risk: morning summaries, flagging overdue invoices, drafting replies you review. Hold off on anything involving payments or signatures until you have watched it for a few weeks.
What to watch
Expect more agents that run on a schedule rather than on demand. The open questions are reliability (does it flag the right things, or add noise?), cost (how fast do background checks eat your limits?) and privacy (what is stored, and for how long?). Anthropic's own IPO filing, covered separately, also says it is unclear when an agent's actions could legally bind the business using it, a reminder that responsibility still sits with you.
Key takeaways
- Claude Duet, announced 21 October, is a cloud-based agent that sends morning briefs and periodic alerts, in US-only research preview for Pro and Max subscribers.
- Meta's Muse Wonder models stress memory and goal persistence; performance and privacy claims await independent testing.
- Start with read-only access and low-risk tasks, and watch plan usage, since background checks count toward limits.
