UPI Market Share: PhonePe, Google Pay and the 800 Million Daily Transactions Milestone
UPI market share shows PhonePe and Google Pay holding about 78% of volume as daily UPI transactions pass 800 million. Latest NPCI figures explained.
UPI market share remains highly concentrated even as the system hits new volume records. NPCI data reported by StartupTalky shows UPI handled 24.07 billion transactions in September 2026, an average of about 802 million a day, the first time the daily average crossed 800 million. At the same time, the most recent app-wise figures, from August, show a few apps handling most payments. Here is what the numbers say and why concentration matters. All figures are as reported by a secondary source quoting NPCI.
September 2026 headline figures
According to the report, September volume was 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore. That is down about 1.8% in volume and 1.5% in value from August's 24.51 billion and ₹29.82 lakh crore, a dip the article attributes mainly to September having 30 days against August's 31. Year on year, volume is up about 23% (from 19.63 billion) and value up about 18%.
Per-day averages tell the cleaner story: about 802 million transactions daily, up from 791 million in August, and a record average daily value of ₹97,913 crore, against ₹96,205 crore the month before.
Who holds the market
NPCI had not released September app-wise data at the time of the report, so the latest split is from August. PhonePe handled 45.64% of volume and 47.82% of value, Google Pay 32.26% and 33.78%, and Paytm 8.03% and 6.87%. Together the top three held 85.93% of volume.
PhonePe plus Google Pay therefore account for roughly 78% of transactions (45.64% plus 32.26%, our arithmetic). Imagine a city where two taxi companies take almost four of every five rides: the service is reliable, but any problem at one of them affects many people.
Why concentration matters
We have not checked whether any market-share limits currently apply, so see NPCI's latest circulars. In general, heavy concentration raises two concerns: operational risk, because an outage at one large app can disrupt millions, and competition, because smaller apps and bank apps struggle to gain scale.
The new merchant fee in the background
From 15 October 2026, a 0.4% merchant discount rate applies to many person-to-merchant payments above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300, per explainers of the government FAQ. The StartupTalky report says the immediate volume impact is likely to be limited and that the next two months of data will show how the fee affects usage. Festive spending typically builds through October and November, so those numbers will be noisy; look at per-day averages and year-on-year comparisons rather than month-to-month swings.
Other rails: IMPS and AePS
The same data shows other payment channels were softer. IMPS handled 354 million transactions worth ₹7.06 lakh crore in September, down in volume from 360 million in August and down about 10% from a year earlier, though value was up about 18% year on year. AePS, the Aadhaar-enabled system, handled about 95.78 million transactions, down roughly 10% year on year. The pattern suggests UPI keeps absorbing everyday payments while older channels shrink or specialise.
What to watch
- October data from NPCI, published in early November, for the first view after the MDR change.
- Whether September and October app-wise shares shift from August levels.
- Daily records around the festive peak.
- Any regulatory step on market concentration.
Practical notes for businesses
If you accept UPI, check how the new fee applies to your typical ticket size and category, and avoid adding surcharges for customers where the rules prohibit them. If you run a payments product, compare your volume trend against the market's per-day growth rather than raw monthly totals.
Key takeaways
- UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions (₹29.37 lakh crore) in September 2026, averaging about 802 million a day, a first above 800 million.
- August data shows PhonePe at 45.64% and Google Pay at 32.26% of volume, so two apps carry roughly 78% of transactions.
- October and November data will show the effect of the new merchant fee and festive demand.
