Sensex rebounds 905 points as earnings lift markets
The Sensex rose 1.24% to 74,151 and the Nifty 1.05% to 22,937 on 29 October 2026 after a weak run, with Brent crude still near $114 a barrel.
Indian shares rebounded on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The Sensex gained 905.01 points, or 1.24%, to close at 74,151.04, and the Nifty 50 rose 237.90 points, or 1.05%, to 22,936.75, according to 5paisa and HDFC Sky. HDFC Sky notes both indices had fallen in six of the previous eight sessions, so the day was a recovery rather than a new trend.
What moved on the day
Company earnings and broad buying drove the gain. Kotak Mahindra Bank was the top contributor, rising about 4.3% and adding 30.64 points to the Nifty, per 5paisa. HDFC Sky reports Adani Ports gained about 6.3% to near a four-month high after higher quarterly profit and raised operating profit guidance, Adani Enterprises 5.2%, Eternal 3.6%, Power Grid 3.4% and NTPC 2.2%.
The laggards were Trent (down 1.8%), Maruti Suzuki (1.3%), Bajaj Auto (1.0%), SBI Life Insurance (0.9%) and Hindalco (0.8%). HDFC Bank cost the Nifty 6.71 points, 5paisa says. Auto was the only sector to fall, with Nifty Auto down 0.24%. The two sources describe the leaders differently: 5paisa puts realty first with a 2.75% gain, then FMCG at 2.34%, while HDFC Sky highlights FMCG and financials. Mid-cap and small-cap indices each rose about 1%.
How broad the rally was
Breadth, the count of rising against falling shares, was positive. 5paisa counts 2,196 stocks up and 1,387 down out of 3,693 traded. HDFC Sky gives 2,443 up and 1,615 down, a larger universe. The totals differ by source, but the direction is the same. Breadth matters because an index can rise on a few heavyweights; here most stocks rose.
The outside factors
The US Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4%, as expected, and said inflation remains elevated, per HDFC Sky. For India this matters because uncertainty about US rates affects how much money foreign investors send to emerging markets.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell about 1% to around $114 a barrel on hopes of renewed US-Iran talks, HDFC Sky says; 5paisa puts the fall at 1.4%. India imports most of its oil, so a barrel at that level still pushes up the import bill, inflation and company costs. A small fall from a high price is relief, not a reset.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought Rs 872 crore of Indian shares on Wednesday, their second day of net buying (provisional), HDFC Sky reports, but they have still sold $3.74 billion of Indian equities in October.
What we do not know
Neither source gave the rupee's close, so we do not cover it. Neither gave a dated outlook for coming sessions. HDFC Sky says sustained gains depend on oil easing further and earnings supporting valuations, and lists geopolitics, high energy costs and global interest rates as risks. One day's move says little about direction after a weak run.
What it means for readers
For investors in listed stocks, the day shows how much weight oil prices, foreign flows and results now carry. For borrowers and lenders, high crude keeps inflation, and so the interest rate outlook, in play. For businesses, energy-heavy sectors face cost pressure while crude stays near $114. This is a summary of what happened, not advice to buy or sell.
What to watch next
- Brent crude and any progress on US-Iran talks.
- Whether foreign investors turn net buyers for more than two sessions.
- More quarterly results, since earnings drove the day's gains.
Key takeaways
- The Sensex rose 905.01 points (1.24%) to 74,151.04 and the Nifty 50 rose 1.05% to 22,936.75 on 29 October 2026.
- Banks, power and ports led, while auto was the only sector to fall.
- Brent crude near $114 a barrel and heavy October foreign selling of $3.74 billion remain the main risks.
- One rebound after six down sessions in eight does not by itself signal a change in direction.
