Sensex ends 308 points higher as IT gains, midcaps slide
The Sensex closed at 74,459.53 and the Nifty at 23,053.10 on 30 October, led by IT, while midcaps and smallcaps fell and Brent crude stayed above $113.
India's main stock indices ended higher on Friday 30 October 2026, with the Sensex up 0.42% at 74,459.53 and the Nifty 50 up 0.51% at 23,053.10, according to Kotak Neo's market wrap. Technology shares led the gains, but the broader market was weak: the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.93% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.85%. Oil, near $113 a barrel for Brent, remained the main outside worry.
How the day closed
Kotak Neo reports the Sensex gained over 300 points, and the Nifty over 110. Both indices ended higher for a second straight session. The Nifty IT index rose 2.32%, while Nifty Consumer Durables fell 1.78%. Zeebiz and Business Standard report the same closing levels. Zeebiz names Trent (up 5.44%) as the top Sensex gainer and State Bank of India (down 1.99%) as the biggest loser, with Infosys up 2.93%. Pharma also gained, with Nifty Pharma up 1.55%. Smallcap 100 losses are reported as 1.85% by Kotak Neo and Business Standard but 2.08% by Zeebiz, so treat that figure as approximate.
The split between large and small shares is the day's main feature. When the headline indices rise while midcaps and smallcaps fall, a few large stocks are doing the lifting. Think of a school class where the top few students score very high, pulling the average up while most of the class does worse. The index average hides the weaker middle.
The previous session for context
The 29 October session was far stronger: this site's morning edition covered a Sensex rebound of 905 points that day. Against that base, Friday's 308-point gain extends the recovery but at a much slower pace, and it came with the broader market under pressure.
Oil, metals and the outside picture
Around 3:35 pm, the source says, Brent January 2027 futures were at $113.09 a barrel and WTI December futures at $103.99, rising on concerns about US-Iran tensions and possible military action. India imports most of its oil, so high crude prices raise the import bill and can push up inflation and weigh on the rupee. Zeebiz says the rupee recovered after three sessions of weakness, which helped sentiment, and quotes its editor Anil Singhvi urging caution about chasing the rally because of crude and weak midcaps.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), December gold futures were at Rs 1,41,658 per 10 grams, down 0.66%, and December silver at Rs 1,84,624 per kg, down 2.55%.
A big listing's quarter
One of the day's company results was from Jio Platforms, which listed this month after a Rs 30,213 crore initial public offering that Inc42 says was oversubscribed 22.19 times. For the September quarter, Jio reported net profit of Rs 8,387 crore, up 13.7% from Rs 7,379 crore a year earlier, on operating revenue of Rs 40,475 crore, up 11.4%. It added 9.1 million customers to reach 542.4 million, with about 300 million on 5G, and average revenue per user of Rs 218.8 a month, up 3.5%. Inc42 says the stock closed 0.57% higher at Rs 1,431.20 on the BSE on the day of the results.
What it means for investors and borrowers
A single session carries little information. What stands out is the narrow breadth: if the weakness in midcaps and smallcaps continues, investors who hold those shares will feel it even when headline indices look calm. For companies, high crude raises costs for fuel-heavy sectors, and Kotak Neo also notes working-capital needs have risen 15 to 20% in recent months, which increases bank borrowing. That fits the strong bank credit growth the RBI reported today, though the source does not link the two. This is not advice to buy or sell anything.

- Crude oil, especially any development on US-Iran tensions.
