Nifty ends week above 23,000 as FPIs turn buyers
Nifty rose about 2% to 23,053 in the week to 30 October 2026 as foreign investors bought Rs 6,300 crore, ending nine weeks of selling.
Indian equities rose for the week ended 30 October 2026, with the Nifty 50 closing at 23,053.10, back above the 23,000 mark, according to weekly reviews from Navia and Zerodha's After Market Report published on 31 October. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net buyers for the first time in nine weeks. Markets were shut for the Saturday, so this is a look back at the week rather than a daily close.
The week in numbers
Navia reports the Nifty up 581.65 points, or 2.59%, and the BSE Sensex up 1,173.61 points, or 1.60%, to 74,459.53. Zerodha puts the Nifty gain at about 2%. The two weekly reviews therefore differ slightly on the size of the move, and which one is right depends on the reference close each used; the closing levels themselves agree. Bank Nifty rose 1.34% to 54,686.95, the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 2.7% and the Smallcap 100 about 4%, per Navia, which also says the combined value of BSE-listed companies rose by more than Rs 22 lakh crore.
Pharma and healthcare led, each up about 7%, followed by media, capital markets and realty. Oil and gas was the only sector to fall, down 0.7%. Among large stocks, Trent gained 10.63%, Dr. Reddy's 9.96% and Apollo Hospitals 9.29%, while Shriram Finance fell 4.84% and Reliance 2.11%.
Who bought
Navia says FPIs were net buyers of Rs 6,304.67 crore, ending nine straight weeks of selling; Zerodha puts the figure at Rs 6,756 crore. Domestic institutions bought Rs 3,109.79 crore in both reviews. Zerodha adds context: over four weeks FPIs have still sold Rs 25,279 crore while domestic institutions bought Rs 52,178 crore, and foreign investors remain heavily short in index futures. One week of buying, in other words, has not reversed a month of selling.
The backdrop: rates, oil and the rupee
The rupee held near 94.95 per US dollar in a 94.90 to 95.37 range, per Navia, with Zerodha quoting 94.89. The 10-year government bond yield fell 7 basis points to 7.45% (a basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point), according to Zerodha. Brent crude stayed above 113 dollars a barrel on Navia's account amid Middle East tensions, and Zerodha says crude rose 1.4% over the week and about 14% over four weeks. Navia says the US Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75% to 4% in a 10-2 vote, with two governors wanting a quarter-point increase, matching market expectations.
What the data does and does not show
Zerodha's measures give a more cautious picture than the headline. India's VIX, the market's fear gauge, eased to 15.30. But 524 stocks hit 52-week lows against 124 new highs, only 31.2% of NSE stocks are above their 200-day average, and the Nifty sits 3.5% below its 40-week moving average. Its trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 19.3 is near five-year lows, with smallcaps at 31.28 times and midcaps at 26.27 times. In plain terms: the index bounced, but participation under the surface is thin, and smaller companies still trade at richer valuations than the benchmark.
Navia also records that Jio Platforms' Rs 30,213 crore IPO listed at a 21.36% premium and that Reliance's Q2 profit rose 40.64% to Rs 25,548 crore. Neither review ties the gains to one cause, and neither explains the pharma rally.
What it means for readers
For borrowers, a lower 10-year yield matters more than the index: it feeds into long-term funding costs for banks and NBFCs, though loan rates move with a lag. A weekly gain with weak breadth and high oil is not a trend, and importers or firms with dollar debt stay sensitive to the 95 rupee level. This is context, not a view on any share.
What to watch next
- Whether FPI buying continues into a second week or reverses.
- Market reaction to Reliance's results and the remaining Q2 earnings, per Navia.
- Three IPOs closing in the coming week, according to Navia.
- Crude prices and Middle East developments, which drive the rupee and bond yields.
Key takeaways
- The Nifty 50 closed the week to 30 October 2026 at 23,053.10, up about 2% to 2.6% depending on the review.
- FPIs bought roughly Rs 6,300 to 6,750 crore, their first net buying in nine weeks, after selling Rs 25,279 crore over four weeks.
- Pharma and healthcare led with gains near 7%, while the oil and gas sector was the only one to fall.
- Market breadth stayed weak, with 524 stocks at 52-week lows, and crude above 113 dollars keeps rupee and rate risks in view.
