NBFC Credit Growth Hits 15.8% as Gold Loans Surge 69%: A Credit-Risk View
NBFC credit growth reached 15.8% in August 2026 as gold loans jumped 69%. What the RBI data and a CIBIL report say, and the risks to watch.
NBFC credit growth accelerated to 15.8% year on year in August 2026, according to RBI data reported by Business Standard, and gold loans were the standout at nearly 69%. A separate industry report, published around the same time, suggests NBFCs are also reaching more first-time borrowers than before. For anyone working in lending or credit risk, fast growth is both an opportunity and a warning light. This piece summarises what the numbers show and what questions a careful analyst would ask. The data is from early October, so it is slightly older than a daily news item, but it is among the most useful recent datapoints for the sector.
The headline numbers
NBFC credit reached about ₹60.64 trillion in August, up from 10% growth a year earlier. Commercial banks grew faster, at 18.8%, with credit of about ₹223.87 trillion, so NBFCs still trail banks overall. In retail lending, however, NBFCs outpaced banks: NBFC retail credit grew 22% to roughly ₹26.48 trillion, while bank retail credit grew 16.9%.
Within retail, the reported growth rates were: gold loans up 69.1% to about ₹3.65 trillion; consumer durables up 56.4%; housing loans up 12.1%; and vehicle loans up 15.4%. Commercial real estate credit from NBFCs rose 21.8% to about ₹1.04 trillion.
Why gold loans are growing so fast
The data does not explain the cause, so what follows is interpretation. Gold loans are secured: the borrower pledges jewellery, and the lender holds it. That makes them quick to approve and attractive to lenders who want security. Gold prices and households' need for short-term cash both tend to push volumes up. A simple analogy is a pawn-style loan with a safety net: if the borrower does not repay, the lender can sell the gold.
The risk is that security is only as good as its value. If gold prices fall sharply while loan-to-value ratios are high, the cushion shrinks. Lenders also need strong custody, valuation and auction processes. Fast growth can mean weaker discipline at the branch level, so credit teams should track loan-to-value, auction rates and fraud incidents closely.
NBFCs reaching new borrowers
A report from the Finance Industry Development Council and TransUnion CIBIL says NBFCs account for about 47% of new-to-credit consumer loan originations and that their credit-active consumer base grew nearly sevenfold over a decade. Loans up to ₹2 lakh made up 82% of consumer originations, and over 58% of NBFC loans by volume came from semi-urban and rural markets.
The same report states that 90+ days delinquency at balance level fell from 2.7% to 1.1% and that the share of above-prime consumers rose from 24% to 32% between June 2019 and June 2026. It is an industry-commissioned report, so read it as a useful but not neutral view.
What a credit-risk analyst would ask
Strong growth is not automatically healthy growth. Useful questions include: how much of the growth comes from new customers with thin credit files? Are small-ticket loans concentrated in a few geographies? How do vintages (groups of loans originated in the same period) perform after 6 to 12 months? Is growth being funded by short-term borrowing at a time when the RBI has raised rates? These questions matter more now that the repo rate has risen to 5.5%.

Key takeaways
- NBFC credit grew 15.8% in August 2026 to about ₹60.64 trillion, while NBFC retail credit grew 22%, ahead of banks.
- Gold loans rose about 69% and consumer durables about 56%, which are fast-moving segments that need careful risk monitoring.
- An industry report points to improving delinquency and wider reach, but fast growth, higher rates and valuation risk call for vintage-level checks.
