Paytm wants a third of UPI, but holds 8.1% today
After a 10-fold jump in Q2 FY27 profit, Paytm's founder says it wants one-third of consumer UPI; it handled 8.1% of listed-app volume in September.
Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma told analysts on the company's September-quarter earnings call that Paytm wants one-third of India's consumer UPI market, StartupFeed reported on 28 October 2026. Paytm handled 1.94 billion UPI transactions in September, or 8.1% of listed-app volume, so the goal means roughly quadrupling its share. With UPI at a record 25.47 billion transactions in October, the target is worth a closer look.
The results behind the ambition
Paytm reported its Q2 FY27 numbers on 27 October. Devdiscourse, citing the results, gives revenue of Rs 2,648 crore, up 28% on a year earlier, and a reported profit after tax of Rs 225 crore against Rs 21 crore. EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) was Rs 270 crore, up 90% and the company's highest for a quarter, with a margin of 10%. Monthly transacting users reached 8.5 crore, up 1 crore, and 1.64 crore merchants were on subscription plans.
One caution on the profit comparison: Devdiscourse says the comparable figures exclude an incentive Paytm received until December 2025, on which basis operating revenue grew 33%. All of these are company-reported numbers that we have not checked against the filing.
How big is the gap?
StartupFeed lays out the September split of listed-app UPI volume: PhonePe 45.6%, Google Pay 32.2% and Paytm 8.1%. One-third of the 23.93 billion listed-app transactions is about 7.98 billion a month, around 4.1 times Paytm's September count. Paytm's share rose from about 7.1% in September 2025 to 8.1%, and at that pace StartupFeed estimates reaching 33% would take more than 25 years. Paytm has set no deadline.
What helps and what stands in the way
Paytm says it is leaning less on cashback and more on in-house AI models that target higher-spending users, and StartupFeed reports its UPI transaction value grew 42% against 19% for the industry. Devdiscourse adds that this was the sixth straight quarter of consumer UPI share gains.
The obstacle is a rule. NPCI's 30% cap on any single third-party app has a compliance deadline of 31 December 2026, StartupFeed notes, and it has been deferred since 2020. NPCI has not said what happens on 1 January 2027. A cap would bind PhonePe, not Paytm, but it shapes how the leaders compete. Sharma also said the goal does not depend on merchant fees arriving, per the same report. The writer at StartupFeed calls one-third a marker rather than a forecast and predicts Paytm's share will be between 8.2% and 8.8% in December data. That is one outlet's opinion.
What it means for readers
For users, a share fight usually means more offers and features in the app, although Paytm says it is moving away from cashback. For merchants, Paytm's subscription base of 1.64 crore merchants is a product to compare on cost with other acceptance options. For anyone tracking fintech earnings, share data matters because UPI itself earns no merchant fee today, so a bigger share does not by itself mean more revenue. Treat the target as a statement of intent from the founder, not a plan with dates.
Try the calculator to see how long a given pace would take. The starting share and the one-year gain are from StartupFeed; the pace you pick is an example.
What to watch next
Watch for NPCI's October app-wise data, which will show whether Paytm's share moved from 8.1%, and for any statement on the 30% cap before 31 December 2026.
